L'auteur - Elisabeth de Miribel
Arrière-petite-fille de Mac-Mahon, Elisabeth de Miribel (1915-2005) appartient à une famille de tradition catholique et militaire. Après un engagement dans les mouvements sociaux d'inspiration chrétienne, elle rejoint la Résistance française à Londres, au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et devient la secrétaire du général de Gaulle. En 1942, le général l'envoie au Québec, où il la charge de rallier les Canadiens à la cause de la France libre. Elle devient ensuite correspondante de guerre, notamment en Italie. Proche des milieux thomistes, en particulier de Jacques Maritain et de son entourage, elle écrit cet ouvrage pendant sa vie religieuse au Carmel de 1949 jusqu'à 1954. Elle rejoint ensuite le Quai d'Orsay, est nommée au Maroc, au Chili, en Autriche, et termine sa carrière comme consule générale de France à Florence.
