This book gives an account of the lively debates which took place in the 20th century around the relation between faith and religious practice on the one hand, and their artistic expression on the other. Rooted in 19th century Catholicism, relayed by a few cenacles at the beginning of the 20th, this issue inspired a rush of vocations during the inter-war years in France, sustained by the theories of Jacques Maritain or Maurice Denis - Christian"artists whose ambition was to create works representing the art of their times for the Church. The appearance in 1950 of the Churches of Assy, Vence and Audincourt, designed or decorated by great artists, attracted considerable media and public attention to the question of contemporary"sacred"art. The review"L'Art sacré"lies at the heart of those events. Founded in 1935 by Joseph Pichard, transferred to Éditions du Cerf in 1937, its direction was the work of two exceptional Dominicans: Marie-Alain Couturier and Pie-Raymond Régamey. During the decisive years between the end of WW2 and the Vatican II Council, they defended the idea that it was imperative for the Church to receive artworks of deep spirituality produced by great contemporary creators. This upset defenders of the so-called art of"Saint-Sulpice"as much as those who advocated"just a little"modernity in sacred art. The resulting"Quarrel"set a large part of society ablaze. This book recalls the history of the review, completing it with monographs on Fathers Couturier and Régamey, on the Commission d'art sacré in Besançon (its members, its actions), and the edifices that nourished the debate: Sainte-Baume, Assy, Vence, Bréseux, Audincourt, Ronchamp. The presentation and analysis of the institution's arguments and their responses underline how high the stakes were and how topical. An index, permitting us to identify the authors and the articles in the review, is completed by a presentation of the main protagonists quoted. A documentary section illustrates some of the dimensions - didactic and aesthetic - of that rich publication and provides an opportunity to see the faces of the major players involved."
