Résumé
--
Born in March 1225, daughter of Louis VIII and Blanche of Castile, Isabelle of France was the young sister of the future Louis IX, Saint Louis. After she refused two marriage proposals, the pope finally approved her wish to live in perpetual virginity without entering holy orders. The princess decided to use the dowry that was reserved for her marriage to found a monastery at Longchamp, near Paris. Following the example of Claire of Assisi - the first woman to have written the rule of her order - Isabelle established that of Longchamp in 1255. To do this, she took advice from the greatest Franciscan masters in Paris at that time, especially Bonaventure. More gentle than the rule of Claire, it allowed the nuns to inherit and possess wealth in common. Approved in 1259, reorganized in 1263, her rule was adopted by several monasteries of 'rich Clares' connected to the royal family: Troyes, Provins, Toulouse. The building of the monastery was finished in 1259. Isabelle de France retired there to live among the nuns, without belonging to their order. She died on 23 February, 1270. The biographers of Saint Louis say little about Isabelle. Yet in the hagiographical account written around 1279-1281 by her former lady-in-waiting, Agnès d'Harcourt, on the request of Charles of Anjou, the king's brother, we discover Isabelle to be an essential character in Saint Louis' entourage. This account shows Isabelle's piety, at the crossroads of Claire of Assisi's holiness and the royal, masculine devoutness of Saint Louis. Forty miracles are then described. Isabelle of France was beatified in 1521 by Pope Leo X. Her cult endured, at least at the Longchamp Abbey, as proved by an office composed in the 16th century. Today, the role she played has been rediscovered by historians.
