L'actualité religieuse proche, avec la proclamation d'une « année sacerdotale », en 2009-2010, conduit à s'intéresser aux figures marquantes de prêtres, et en particulier au curé d'Ars, déclaré par l'Église saint patron de tous les prêtres. En faisant la part du contexte historique du 19e siècle, volontiers doloriste, tendant à brimer le corps humain plutôt qu'à chercher son bien être, on reste touché par la bonté foncière, le souci des âmes et la qualité pastorale de Jean-Marie Vianney. C'est ce qui ressort du beau texte de Michel Carrouges, ancien rédacteur en chef de Fêtes & Saisons, rédigé pour ce même magazine dans l'immédiat après guerre et vendu à plus d'un million d'exemplaires. Compte tenu de quelques modifications apportées par les recherches actuelles (montrant en particulier l'évolution du curé d'Ars vers une plus grande indulgence envers son corps), ce texte est réédité en l'état.

Jean-Marie Vianney, the saint often referred to as the Curé d'Ars, would have been surprised to find some of his thoughts and words, gleaned from his forty-one year ministry in Ars, assembled here in this book. Snatched in passing from his homilies, catechisms, meetings or simply observations, they diffuse authenticity, simplicity, but above all the faith, hope and charity that animated Jean-Marie Vianney. They speak of God but we can also detect the priest's own personality, clairvoyance and exigency which remain intense, sometimes incisive, undoubtedly transmitting the things he would have liked to say today... All the wisdom and simple good sense of a 'poor man who asked God for everything' are there in front of us, for us. 'Le Curé d'Ars remains a matchless example for all countries,' Pope John- Paul II reminded us in Ars in 1986 'he is a witness and a master... to be discovered without fail!' Father Bernard Nodet (1911-1990), priest in the diocese of Belley, published this collection in 1956 after many years of research in Ars. Reprinted several times, it soon became a 'classic' and a must for all those who want to meet the Curé d'Ars and discover his thinking.
