Le marché, le temple et l'évangile

Le catholicisme est une réalité mouvante et complexe. Comment interpréter ce qui s'y passe aujourd'hui en Europe occidentale ? Ce livre propose une hypothèse de travail : il se meut entre trois modèles, trois styles, trois cohérences dominantes. Le premier modèle est placé sous le signe du Marché. Dans la société pluraliste, chacun propose sa conception du monde, et le plus convaincant « fait » la vérité. Ce catholicisme désinstitutionnalisé et individualiste se manifeste par la survivance de rites de passage et l'affirmation de « valeurs chrétiennes ». Le modèle du Temple met l'accent sur les pouvoirs hiérarchiques et le juridisme rigide et autoritaire, il prétend connaître la vérité qu'il se doit de proclamer, alors que le monde moderne part à la dérive. Cette cohérence est devenue insupportable pour la majorité de nos contemporains. Tant la fidélité à Jésus et à sa cause que la crédibilité du catholicisme appellent un troisième modèle, déterminé par l'écoute attentive du témoignage fondateur, dans sa logique propre. Vivre plus en cohérence avec ce dont témoignent les évangiles : n'est-ce pas le plus urgent ? Un catholicisme ainsi ressourcé ne rejoindrait-il pas le désir profond de l'homme d'aujourd'hui ? Le catholicisme, et chaque personne qui y adhère, est tiraillé entre ces trois pôles. Choisir librement son chemin spirituel et vivre dans la sincérité personnelle pouvoir s'appuyer sur une identité forte, des certitudes et des structures claires être enraciné dans la Tradition subversive de Jésus et commencer à expérimenter l'utopie du Royaume dans une communauté fraternelle : ces trois désirs cohabitent en chacun. Cependant il n'y aura pas d'avenir pour le catholicisme sans le courage de se rapprocher de l'expérience fondatrice.

Catholicism is a changing and complex reality. How can we interpret what is happening today in Western Europe? This book proposes a working hypothesis: it refers to three models, three styles, three dominant consistent patterns. The first model is placed under the sign of the Market. In a pluralistic society, each person can proclaim his or her conception of the world, and the most convincing 'creates' the truth. This deinstitutionalized and individualistic Catholicism is manifest in the survival of rites of passage and the affirmation of 'Christian values'. The second model, placed under the sign of the Temple, puts the accent on hierarchical and juridical powers: rigid and authoritarian, it claims to hold the truth and must proclaim it, as the modern world drifts off in all directions... This model has become unacceptable to the majority of our contemporaries. Two things call for a third model: fidelity to Jesus and his cause and the credibility of Catholicism. The third model, under the sign of the Gospel, is determined by careful observation of the founding testimony in its specific coherence. Isn't the most urgent thing to live in keeping with what the Gospel proclaims? Wouldn't Catholicism, resourced in this way, respond to the man of today's deepest desires? Catholicism, and each person who adheres to it, is torn between these three models. To choose one's spiritual path freely and live in personal sincerity to be able to lean on a strong identity, certitudes and clear structures to plunge one's roots into the subversive Tradition of Jesus and begin to experiment the utopia of the Kingdom in a fraternal community: these three desires coexist within all of us. Yet there can be no future for Catholicism without the courage to draw near the founding experience.
