Le martyre des survivants de la shoah
Chargueraud Marc - Collection L'histoire à vif
Résumé
--
At the end of WW2, in Eastern Europe, there were more than a million survivors of the Holocaust. Hardly were they 'freed' from the camps than they found themselves the victims of murderous pogroms the persecutions continued. They had no choice but to flee. As the years went by, more than 900,000 Jewish survivors were obliged to seek refuge far from their native lands, especially in Israel. In this way, the populations and the governments of the 'popular democracies' succeeded in accomplishing what Hitler did not, despite the millions of victims of the Holocaust: to make Eastern Europe ' judenfrei' (free of Jews). This final chapter of the Holocaust took place in full view of the free world, triumphant but still largely anti-Semite in spite of the 'Jewish tragedy'. During the first post-war years, those countries systematically closed their eyes and their doors to the Jewish survivors who were desperately seeking refuge. This tragedy is little-known. Most historians cease their research at the victory, in May 1945. 'The Martyrdom of the Survivors of the Holocaust' is the first book to tell the whole story. In so doing, it crushes many preconceived ideas and prejudices, reveals paradoxical situations and resituates certain events in a wider context.
