Catholic theology has long neglected this important - indeed central - doctrine of the Church, although it is clearly stated in the New Testament, in the Constitutions and Decrees of the Second Vatican Council and in the 'Catechism of the Catholic Church'. Paul Philibert feels that the time has come to repair this lack and explore a potentially healthy contribution to ecclesial life: the 'priesthood' or sacerdoce of the baptised is, especially in its relation to the ministerial sacerdoce, the key to a lively Church. 'A living Church is a Church that is aware of the dynamism inherent to its baptismal vocation, a Church that aspires to see its members invest in the transforming grace of Christ in the world, a Church that gives itself like a sacrament (living sign) of the true meaning of human existence. A living Church is a sacerdotal people who devote the world itself to God.' This is the simple, theological and pastoral message Paul Philibert delivers in this book an urgent message that transmits hope, since today's crisis in the Church offers Christians a unique and paradoxical occasion to take hold - or regain hold - of their Church and its fundamental vocation.
