Résumé
--
Like all great writers, Newman forged a style to match his genius. The flexibility of his writing is incontestable: the concrete turn of phrase, the extreme fluidity of words and images that confer to Newman's prose a perfect adaptation to the ideas that inspire it and the thought it transmits. In spite of the extreme diversity of themes and subjects treated during his long career, the excellence of the writing, prodigiously, never fails. Read a page of 'Parish Sermons' or the 'Apologia', a theological study or a Romanesque narrative, a polemic on faith or culture... you will always find the same quality of language: precise, flowing, descriptive and rich in imagery, energetic and meticulous, as though, after embracing its object, it seems to rush to close the analysis and share the logic that supported it. It is not rare that during the development, an expression that illustrates and resumes the discourse emerges unexpectedly, like a flash of lightening. The writing is the fruit of a density of thought, supremely accurate and concise. Like beaten gold, the thought glows. Sometimes of paradoxical turn, it fixes the attention and takes on the value of a symbol that says and represents the essence. Teilhard de Chardin, a great reader of Newman, appreciated those expressions that illustrate and condense his thinking. In his letters, he acknowledges how much he owes them: 'A mass of Newman's ideas... so broad, so frank, so realistic... which entered into my spirit as though into a dwelling they had already occupied for a long, long time...' Cardinal Jean Honoré, one of France's greatest authorities on the thoughts of J. H. Newman, takes the reader to the heart of a rich and coherent teaching. The lucidity of the writing will give readers great pleasure as the erudition awakens their desire to know more about an incomparable theological and spiritual patrimony.
