Résumé
--
Philosophers and philologists have proposed an interpretation of Hindu mythology in which specifically Western categories play a major role. More often than not, they deliberately ignore the way in which Indians themselves regard that mythology, present in the 'Vedas' and the two epics of 'Mahabharata' and 'Ramayana'. The Jaina religion, which appeared at the same time in history as Buddhism, is still practiced in India today, whereas Buddhist thinking has survived there only in philosophical debate. Since its beginnings, Jainism has had to compete with Hinduism, and in later years with Islam. These confrontations are echoed not only in abstract and academic works, but also in audacious texts that use different forms of fiction (ballads and novels) to bring the myths of Hindu mythology into question, subjecting them to a critique that is essentially ironic. Haribhadra's 'Balade des coquins' and the two religious novels by Harisena and Amitagati allow us to understand how the Jains received texts and images from Hinduism between the 7th - 8th centuries and adjusted them to suit their own doctrine. Thus the 'universal imminence of divinity' was set aside because of its inherent physical contradictions, and supplanted by a system that places all creatures (men, gods, animals and demons) in their own role. Violence toward living things, exalted by sacrificial practices, was outlawed and replaced by a new definition of relations between living creatures, based on dialogue, tolerance and friendship. So the Jaina critique of Hindu mythology is not limited to irony or mockery. By substituting new values to those imposed by Hindu texts and images, it opens the path to conversion and a new way of living: secularism and monasticism, each with their own specific rules.
