Le nom du père Sophrony (1896-1993) est surtout connu par le livre qu'il a consacré au starets Silouane, son père spirituel, décédé en 1938 et canonisé dans l'Église orthodoxe en 1988. Les lettres présentées ici sont la correspondance qu'il a entretenue avec le père Boris Stark auquel le liait une profonde amitié. Le père Stark et sa famille avaient traversé dans la douleur tous les soubresauts de l'histoire de la Russie à l'aube du XXe siècle. Après avoir perdu sa mère en 1925, le jeune Boris rejoignit son père en France. Il avait alors une quinzaine d'années. Ce n'est qu'en 1952 que, marié et père de famille, il retourna en Russie pour exercer son ministère, successivement à Kostroma, puis à la cathédrale de Kherson, et enfin à Rybinsk et Laroslavl. Son rayonnement fut considérable et dut certainement beaucoup à son lien avec le père Sophrony. « Jusqu'à la fin de ses jours, l'archimandrite Sophrony n'a pas cessé de nourrir spirituellement notre famille en correspondant régulièrement avec nous. » C'est le trésor de cette correspondance et de cette amitié que la famille du père Boris Stark a voulu partager.

The name of Father Sophrony (1896-1993) is familiar especially because of the book he devoted to his spiritual father, the starets Silouane, who died in 1938 and was canonised by the Orthodox Church in 1988. The letters published here are his correspondence with Father Boris Stark, with whom he enjoyed a deep friendship. Father Stark and his family lived through painful upheavals at the dawn of 20th-century Russia. When his mother died in 1925, the young Boris, who was only fifteen at the time, joined his father in France. It was not until1952, when he was married and had a family, that he returned to Russia to carry out his ministry - first at Kostroma, then in Kherson cathedral, and finally at Rybinsk and Laroslavl. His influence was considerable, and was certainly due, to a great extent, to his connection with Father Sophrony. 'Right to the end of his days, archimandrite Sophrony constantly nourished our family spiritually by writing to us regularly.' It is this invaluable correspondence and friendship that Father Boris Stark's family wish to share with us here.
