Lettres a diane d'andalo

Fin lettré, prédicateur au charisme incomparable, Jourdain de Saxe - qui succéda à saint Dominique à la tête de l'ordre des Prêcheurs - rencontra Diane d'Andalò alors qu'il était encore provincial de Lombardie : celle-ci avait fait profession de vie religieuse entre les mains de Dominique lui-même, malgré l'opposition virulente de sa famille. Devenu son guide et son ami, Jourdain la soutiendra fidèlement, ainsi que les membres de sa petite communauté naissante de Sainte-Agnès, à Bologne. Cette relation donna lieu à une correspondance exceptionnelle à plus d'un titre : si elle permet de suivre Jourdain dans ses nombreux voyages et d'assister à la rapide expansion que connut l'Ordre en ce début du XIIIe siècle, elle permet surtout d'admirer une amitié spirituelle forte, chaleureuse, entre un homme et une femme animés par le désir de se soutenir mutuellement dans la recherche de Dieu et l'accomplissement de leur vocation. Par son constant souci fraternel, Jourdain y témoigne également de l'importance que les frères attachent à la présence, au coeur même de l'Ordre, des moniales qui, par leur écoute de la Parole de Dieu, leur prière et leur vie fraternelle, soutiennent la vie et la mission des frères, en participant ainsi à la tâche de la prédication. Tous deux, Jourdain de Saxe et Diane d'Andalò, ont été déclarés bienheureux.

A man of letters, a preacher of incomparable charisma, Jourdain de Saxe - who succeeded Saint Dominic at the head of the Order of Preachers - met Diane d'Andalò when he was still a provincial in Lombardy: she had made religious profession into the hands of Dominic himself, in spite of the virulent opposition of her family. Jourdain became her guide and her friend, and upheld her faithfully, as well as the members of her budding little community of Saint-Agnès, in Bologne. Their friendship gave rise to a correspondence that is exceptional in more than one way: not only does it permit us to follow Jourdain in his many voyages and witness the rapid expansion of the Order in those first years of the 13th century, it also, and above all, gives us the opportunity to admire a strong and warm spiritual friendship between a man and a woman, both driven by the desire to provide mutual support in their search for God and the accomplishment of their vocation. By showing constant brotherly care, Jourdain also testifies to the importance the brothers attach to the presence, at the heart of the Order, of monials who, by listening to the Word of God, their prayer and their fraternal life, support the life and the mission of the brothers, so participating in the task of predication. Both Jourdain de Saxe and Diane d'Andalò have been declared Blessed.
