Résumé
--
Ghazali (1058-1111), teacher at the university in Baghdad and the greatest Muslim thinker of the Middle Ages, is recognized by the worlds of literature and science as one of the finest experts of his time in matters of law ('fiqh'), philosophy ('falsafa'), exegetics ('tafsir') and theology ('kalâm'). He finally abandoned the incertitude of philosophy and theology, realizing that there is no 'salvation' other than in the ascetic and mystical experience that leads to spiritual wisdom and closeness ('qurb') to God. 'Maladie de l'âme et maîtrise du coeur' is the translation of book XXII of a masterly work entitled The Revival of the Religious Sciences. Consisting of forty books and regarded as a reference in which many Muslims search nourishment for their religious experience, it is universally referred to as the 'the Proof of Islam' ('Hujjat al'Islâm'). The author presents a programme of spiritual and moral reform for all readers, with the aim of giving the earthly city a 'supplement of soul'. In this book, devoted to the preliminaries that are essential to all spiritual experience, Ghazali reveals his deep knowledge of human psychology and his pedagogical skills in the education of those who wish to undertake an ascetic effort in their search for God. This translation has one advantage: it permits us to discover a methodology that is typical of religious education in the Muslim context. The disciple is invited first of all to draw on the teaching of the Koran and the 'words' or 'acts and gestures' of the Prophet of Islam, then to draw inspiration from the great historical figures of his religious tradition and the characteristics of wisdom transmitted by great thinkers. The Christian will discover with amazement that a certain Jesus is occasionally presented as a spiritual master. With an irrefutable respect for orthodoxy, this book, which has left its mark on generations of fervent Muslims, is intended for all sincere believers who are keen to engage their lives on the path to God and to progress along that path as far as possible.
