Résumé

A wonderful non-fiction and romance novel! There's a comment by Barbara Ardinger, Ph. D. in the United States, about this beautiful story of Moroccan jewish community and History: ''The opening is wonderful! It sets a tone of intelligent discourse and prepares the reader for drama. Is this child going to grow up to be Simone Weil? Cinderella? Years and years ago, when I was in college, I read a French novel called Le Juste. I'm sure Marie is going to grow up to be one of the Just whose presence enlightens the world, if only in a small way. Your novel also reminds me of the novels of Camus and Kim Chernin and the art of Marc Chagall. The tone of your prose is magical. Although the history is factual, reading this book is like reading a fairy tale, and, indeed, Marie's first appearance among the rag-tag street urchins shows her as a fairy princess. Likewise, the trades she makes for her jewelry sound like elements out of a fairy tale. The reader is immediately enchanted and the enchantment of this tale of coming of age in a foreign land doesn't ever let go. As Moroccan Jews living in troubled times, this family cannot be expected to look like the typical American TV family. Their very difference is one thing that will attract readers who want to know more about the world. The Jews themselves are interesting. This isn't Fiddler on the Roof, with its picture of another large family living in troubled times, but the themes are similar: a decreasing population, diminishing Jewishness as people try to survive in an alien world, seeking love outside the community. It's good for readers to see the universal in the particular.''
