Memoria passionis - un souvenir provocant dans unesociete pluraliste

Résumé
--
'A Religion whose face is turned toward the world, Christianity cannot simply ignore the shadow cast over our hopes by the history of human suffering it is dramatically compelled to rethink, and in a new way, the essential question of theodicy, that of God. This leads us to compare our memories of the Bible with various contemporary religious and cultural universes, and to think anew the burning problems of the history of man's passion. In a religion that sees compassion in God's passion - a non-sentimental expression of a love that is rooted in the indestructible unity of God's love and man's love, the History of humanity, considered as a history of passion, can only reject the (modern) idea of non-dialectical progress, but also the (post-modern) intention to dissolve History in a plurality of totally unrelated histories. That is why Christianity criticizes the widespread notion that history is fundamentally removed from the dialectic of memory and forgetfulness, thus comforting today's cultural amnesia by effacing all recollection of passion from memory. [...] By rethinking the theme of theodicy in theological terms, we are not - as the word and its history might suggest -returning to the old chestnut of"justifying God"in spite of everything. The reality of suffering and evil must be faced. It is rather, even exclusively, a question of asking ourselves if we can talk about God in a general way, given the unfathomable suffering of the world, 'his' world. To my mind, that is the question of theology, as impossible to eliminate as to answer: the eschatological question, that for which theology has no decisive answer yet demands that we continue to seek new language, so that we never allow ourselves to forget it.'
