Oscar Arnulfo Romero (1917-1980) est sans nul doute le Salvadorien le plus connu hors des frontières de son pays. Personnage emblématique de l'histoire de l'Église latino-américaine, son existence et sa destinée - son assassinat, son martyre - ne cessent de susciter l'intérêt des différentes générations de croyants, comme un exemple d'authenticité, de courage et de don de soi. Issu du peuple, engagé courageusement dans la transformation de l'histoire, Oscar Romero n'aura jamais cessé de réclamer son appartenance aux classes populaires qui forment le Peuple de Dieu, pierre angulaire de son inspiration prophétique. La vie simple des paysans et des ouvriers lui ouvrit les yeux sur la réalité de l'exploitation des pauvres et transforma peu à peu son rapport aux Écritures. Révélant les causes fondamentales de l'injustice et de la répression, il démasqua l'ampleur et la nature du mal dont était victime la société salvadorienne, et il apprit à se situer de manière consciente et responsable devant la réalité. L'intention de cet ouvrage n'est pas seulement de rendre hommage à cet homme hors du commun, mais aussi de rendre justice aux victimes de l'intolérance politique et des intérêts oligarchiques qui ont dévasté le Salvador au cours de la période étudiée. Bien plus qu'une biographie individuelle, il s'agit de l'histoire d'un peuple confronté aux exigences de sa survie, l'Église du Salvador demeurant celle qui possède le plus grand nombre de martyrs tombés au service de l'Évangile et de la libération. Dans ce contexte, Oscar Romero, comme homme d'Église engagé corps et âme au service de son peuple, apparaît comme un phare de la conscience universelle, un apôtre de la non-violence et un prophète des temps modernes.

Oscar Arnulfo Romero (1917-1980) is beyond doubt the Salvadorian best known outside the borders of his country. An emblematic character in the history of the Latin American Church, his life and destiny - his murder and martyrdom - has constantly attracted the interest of successive generations of believers, as a model of authenticity, courage and self-sacrifice. A man of the people, courageously committed to transforming history, Oscar Romero never ceased to proclaim his belonging to the poorer classes, those who form the People of God and the keystone of his prophetic inspiration. The simple life of peasants and workers opened his eyes to the reality of the exploitation of the poor and, little by little, transformed his relation to the Scriptures. Denouncing the fundamental causes of injustice and repression, he revealed the extent and the nature of the evil Salvador's people had to bear, and learned how to face reality with awareness and responsibly. The aim of this book is not only to pay homage to this outstanding man, but also to do justice to the victims of political intolerance and oligarchy, which devastated Salvador during the period studied. Much more than an individual biography, this is the history of a people confronted with the fight to survive: the Church of Salvador possesses the greatest number of martyrs, who gave their lives for the Gospel and freedom. In this context, Oscar Romero, as a man of the Church profoundly committed to the service of his people, appears like a ray of light of universal conscience, an apostle of non-violence and a prophet of our times.
