--
Fifty years ago, at the dawn of Vatican II, Joseph Samson (1888-1957), choirmaster of Saint Benign's Cathedral in Dijon, died. Over a period of twenty-seven years, he had established the former Dijon Benedictine abbey as a metropolis of sacred song. This anniversary provides an opportunity to republish his last book, 'Musique et chant sacrés', an invitation for all those involved in liturgy (priests, laypeople, musicians, composers) to discover an astonishing personality of mid-twentieth century liturgical music. A few months before he undertook his final journey, Joseph Samson collected, in this volume, the essence of his entire thinking on liturgical music. What music for the new liturgy? What is the musician's role? What place does art have? Joseph Samson, an outstanding visionary, provides the answers to many questions which arose from Vatican II: he demonstrates the mixture of subtlety and intelligence that should be cultivated between tradition and the new requirements of liturgy. In this work, readers will encounter one of the most eminent thinkers of liturgical music of the last century, and an apostle of its beauty. They will also discover responses to questions posed by today's liturgy, where the place of tradition in the Roman Catholic liturgy is once more questioned by recent pontifical documents.
