Résumé
This differential viewpoint is developed in two parts. On the one hand, an introductory text provides an explanatory summary of the history of the bridge, seeking to demonstrate the continuous presence of essential architectonic values in the conception of these structures from classical antiquity through to the early years of the 20th century; on the other hand, a wide-ranging selection presents thirty exemplary bridges designed or built between 1980 and 1994, grouped in chapters devoted to City and public space, History and metaphor Construction and discipline and Structure and monument, giving particular attention to those bridges whose conception and form places them on the frontier between architecture and engineering.
