Résumé
--
A specialist in Eastern canon law, Mgr Dimitrios Salachas brings us a comprehensive overview of the relations between theology and discipline in the institutions of the Eastern Churches in communion with Rome, which number about twenty in the world. These Catholic Eastern Churches exist in their own right, 'sui iuris', just like the Latin Church. All of them are in full communion with the Catholic apostolic and Roman Church. In 1959, Pope John XXIII called for a synod in his diocese of Rome, as well as the ecumenical general council Vatican II, opened in 1962 and concluded by Pope Paul VI in 1965. John XXIII had specifically asked that canon law- the internal law of religion-be updated, which meant adapting Latin canon law, as well as the institutional matrix of the different canon laws of each Eastern Church in communion with Rome. As a result, in 1983, John-Paul II promulgated the Code of Latin Canon Law, and in 1990, the Code of Canons for the Eastern Churches in Communion with Rome. They are analysed in this book, Latin Church and Eastern Church: a complementarity that Pope Benedict XVI constantly underlines.
