Orient et occident
Les structure ecclésiales vues dans l'histoire des sept premiers conciles oecuméniques
Wilhelm de Vries - Collection Bibliothèque du Cerf
Résumé
--
In the course of history, the Churches of the East and West have grown progressively further apart. Although still aware of their basic proximity, they have become more or less estranged. Attempts at a union, that of the Council of Lyons in 1274 and that of the Council of Florence in 1438, turned out to be fruitless. Can Orient and Occident ever settle their age-old dispute and come together again? They can only succeed in this if they learn to understand each other, and specify the exact point at which the rift took place. In this precise, remarkably well-documented and honest book, Wilhelm De Vries, who was Professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome when he wrote it, demonstrates how the history of the Churches of the East and West has been one of confrontation between two divergent conceptions of ecclesial structures. This book has made a major contribution to the dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. In his preface, Cardinal Yves Congar identifies the tasks which, after this historic work, are incumbent upon theologians whose hearts are set on Unity.
