Résumé
--
The origin of the universe, of life and of man the secrets of DNA and the long march of the vertebrates the dawn of philosophical and religious questioning current questions about evolution and the future of humanity freedom, man's responsibility, the drama of evil and death, the relationship with an possible Creator... Twenty years after a first essay on Evolution, three scientists take up the pen once again, to update the facts in those domains where research has proved fruitful and advances have proliferated. Through this work - whose originality lies in the fact that it offers a rigorous scientific synthesis as well as a philosophical approach and religious reflection - the authors help to clarify the debate, at a time when trends in thinking tend to blur the outlines. For, while Neo-Darwinian theories are developing a cut and dried materialistic vision of human nature, a 'fundamentalist' Christian movement is denying Evolution altogether, and a 'Neo-Creationist' wing of thought is trying to scientifically prove that there exists an 'intelligent design', and that the universe was prepared for the appearance of man. The authors, for their part, demonstrate that there is room for a cosmological and metaphysical reflection that respects different levels of thought by never mistaking itself for a science. , Without confusing disciplines, they present a reading of Evolution that could be interpreted as a manifestation of God's creative act. The readers will appreciate the pedagogical care invested in this book: a concise (though not simplistic) presentation of the facts, discoveries and theories a language that is accessible (but nevertheless ensures the precise reporting of scientific data) countless illustrations along with boxes and diagrams to complete a clearly laid out text.
