Préhistoire de la foi chrétienne

L'apparition de la foi chrétienne, il y a deux mille ans représente un bien étrange moment de l'histoire universelle. Tous les peuples vivaient sous le dais de panthéons où régnait une fringante société de dieux et de déesses. Un seul peuple faisait exception : il ne reconnaissait qu'un Dieu, Yahvé. Comment ces deux puissantes religiosités ont-elles pu laisser s'ouvrir au milieu d'elles l'espace de celle qui faisait d'un bien modeste Israélite, Jésus de Nazareth, la figure même du divin ? Pour le comprendre, faut-il simplement se référer aux évangiles ? Leur rédaction ne fut pas la cause mais l'effet de l'élan primordial de cette foi. Le milieu matriciel direct a été celui du judaïsme. Lors des apparitions pascales, seule la référence aux « Écritures » permit aux Apôtres d'approcher l'identité secrète du Christ. S'y attestait un Dieu qui, tout en préservant jalousement sa transcendance, s'annonçait avec vocation à l'humain et s'invitait à la société de son peuple pour un projet de vie. En remontant alors aux origines mêmes de cette foi on a la surprise de découvrir des préalables qui, généralement, ont été laissés dans l'ombre : la Bible conserve aussi la mémoire de la religiosité qui a précédé le polythéisme lui-même. Dans l'animisme, le numineux n'avait existé qu'à l'état d'incarnation dans le physique. Dès lors, l'analogie entre l'affleurement primordial du sens religieux - « l'ancien testament païen » (P. Ricœ ur) - et le spécifique de la foi chrétienne demande que soient retenues également les traces d'une telle séquence. Par l'attention à ces antécédents jusqu'ici négligés ou jugés dangereux, se propose dans ces pages une approche du fait chrétien qui emprunte la voie par laquelle celui-ci est lui même advenu.

The appearance of the Christian faith, two thousand years ago, represents a singularly strange event in universal history. All the peoples of the earth lived under the awning of pantheons, reigned over by a frolicsome society of gods and goddesses. But one people formed an exception: they only had one God, Yahveh. How did these two powerful religious entities open up a space between them for a religion that would make a humble Israelite, Jesus of Nazareth, the very image of divinity? To answer that question, is it enough simply to read the Gospels? Their writing was not the cause but the consequence of that primordial surge of faith. The milieu that served as a direct matrix was that of Judaism. During the paschal apparitions, only the reference to the 'Scriptures' allows the Apostles to approach the secret identity of Christ. There speaks a God who, though jealously protecting his transcendence, proclaims a human vocation and invites himself into the society of His people to reveal a life project. By travelling back to the very origins of that faith, one is surprised to discover presages that have often been left in the shadows: the Bible also keeps the memory of the religiosity that preceded even polytheism. In animism, the numina only existed in a state of physical incarnation. This being so, the analogy between the primordial emergence of religious signification - 'the pagan old testament' in the words of Paul Ricoeur - and the specificity of the Christian faith demands that we also bear in mind the traces of such a sequence. By heeding these antecedents until now ignored or deemed dangerous, this book proposes an approach to the Christian event that follows the very path by which that event arrived.
