Résumé
--
To pray is to gradually become aware of the Divine love which is faithfully offered to us, despite our weaknesses and faults, and to undertake, just as gradually, our own loving response. After reminding us that God truly loves man, and that He needs our love and awaits us, the author, in a pedagogical and precise manner, goes over the classic stages of prayer - verbal, meditative and contemplative - to demonstrate the genuine continuity between all three. Verbal prayer is always somewhat self-interested, but even so, it is the fruit of a true commitment. It helps us to discover some features of the Divine countenance and instils a desire to venture further meditation on the Scriptures and spiritual works helps us to know and love that countenance more, and induces great confidence and serenity. But we are not yet completely satisfied. Meditation has its limits: a paucity of contemplation of God. God then comes, seizes the soul and drags it down to the depths, through the darkness of spiritual nights, to make us understand... that there is nothing to understand in God! Enveloped in His infinite and beneficent love, the soul at last finds assurance, peace and joy, by delivering itself up in its entirety... A wonderful incitement to begin the journey.
