Résumé
Objects and people tend to take on a natural individual form each seeking out through a kind of vital intuitive projection the true expression of their own existence. In the same way it seems to me inconceivable to imagine a building whose external lines are merely incidental to its structure and function, no more than the outward appearance of a machine can be perceived as its eleventh-hour makeshift packaging added on to please the eye and protect the underlying mechanisms. It would be just as absurd to think of the human form as being a later adaptation to a stock accumulation of bones, muscular and nervous tissues, and motor functions. Individual existences tend to develop along the lines of a personal design or project, but the latter cannot be thought of as a kind of instruction manual for life in general. Since the qualities involved are not necessarily innate, man has to strive for precision and embrace the desire for perfection as a guide to the development of civilization.
The human project is not based solely on instinct or necessity, but is also affected by freedom of choice, "the entire basis of responsibility", with results internationally considered as "good" or "bad" choices. Every aspect of a society embodies a cultural action, because its valid choices in the cultural sense are also valid in human terms. What are these cultural parameters within which a society's characteristics are defined? They lie along the lines of "the visible, the readable, the understandable". This can be perceived as the need to communicate a design for research, itself comprising a design, in the architectural concept of buildings, which calls for architecture and communication with others, which should be efficient as an "informative" cultural factor, but is not to be seen as coercive. This imperative should present positive challenges from a social point of view as well as stimulating new development and contributing to the breakdown of over-conservative stagnation...
