A collection of notes taken over a period of seven long years in two schoolboy's jotters: this 'Diary', was published for the first time in 1962 by friends and well-wishers of Marie-Alain Couturier. He noted down his thoughts after interviews with Matisse or Braque his readings of Proust or Racine his aesthetic or spiritual confrontations with his contemporaries (especially Picasso and Claudel) his reflections on the sacred on his role as a priest, or on childhood memories. This book invites us to enter into the whirlwind of a man's mind, a man who, in the words of Michel Serres, sought beauty as a means of 'subduing the sacred'. So many works, ideas and experiences marked out and nourished the constant reflection of Father Couturier, his engagement in the priesthood and in artistic creation, equally fervent and free. "You really ought to be beatified, so that we might have an alternative vision of saints", concludes Father Kim En Joong in his epistolary preface, where he reaffirms his interest and admiration for the work of this 'pioneer'. For at the time when Father Couturier, a Dominican, first became involved in the defence of sacred art, the Church no longer had any consideration for artists, at the risk of being content to accept the kind of religious trinket the priest incessantly deplored.
