Résumé
This book was written for people who want to be technically proficient as developers of Web sites. These will usually be persons who want to be "Web masters"-developing Web sites for themselves or others. They'll want to be able to write software that executes on the Web server for many tasks from providing dynamic content for Web pages to utilities for managing a Web site.
What is covered?
This book covers many important topics in the area of supporting a Web site. We look at applications for implementing tasks, such as examining the various log files produced by Web server software. We examine programs for collecting data from HTML document forms; we learn how to tie HTML "front-ends" to SQL database engines on the Web server: We build a shopping-cart application and an application that interacts with the e-mail system. We even build our own mini Web server that will deliver HTML documents on demand.
The primary tool for the interaction between client browsers and Web servers is the Java servlet. Servlets are powerful program elements that are easy to use to build substantial Web sites.
Although the title identifies Java as the primary language for this server-side programming activity, we have provided material on Perl. In order to be an effective Web master these days, you must know Perl, if only to understand and modify existing server-side software. But a more direct application in this book is that Perl provides a way to use Java in what are called CGI applications in situations where servlets may not be an option. We show how to leverage your knowledge of Java to create CGI applications in these cases.
One of the newer and powerful technologies involves using JavaBeans and JavaServer Pages. We cover these in enough detail that you can develop your own.
This is not a reference book. Textbooks have the mission that I've tried to adopt in my classes: to teach you what you need to know so that you can teach yourself the rest. If you learn what's in this book, you can teach yourself the rest.
