Résumé
This is the only complete edition of Soap Hubbies in print; it contains almost half again as much material as any other. All 83 illustrations, including the full-page color plate, have been reproduced, as have the author's hints on performing his experiments and an up-to-the-minute listing of sources of supply and trade names.
The book consists of dozens of experiments, explanations of the principles they demonstrate, and, finally, more detailed discussions of the color and thickness of bubbles. The natural laws that come into play throughout the book are fascinating in themselves, but they also have ramifications in many other areas of modern physics. The phenomenon, for example, of liquid-surface tension has applications that range from recent attempts to understand the atomic nucleus to the theories of the genesis of our planetary system.
The exposition is amazingly lucid as Boys shows how liquid films, surface tension, and related phenomena react to heat, motion, music, magnetic fields; how a jet of water may amplify sound; and how oil smooths troubled waters. There are experiments with capillary action, liquid drops, tension and curvature of soap films, liquid cylinders and jets, soap bubbles on frames, soap bubbles with ether, bubbles other than soap bubbles, composite bubbles, and much more.
