After September 11, it was said that politicians would do well to study theology. Does that mean they should sign up with Carl Schmitt, the man who made the term 'theological politics' famous? His work is far from being unanimously approved. On the contrary, it has been at the centre of the most passionate polemic and controversy. His strength lies more in the questions he raises than in the responses he provides. Such is precisely the case with 'theological politics', a problematic notion par excellence that designates both the scientific project of 'the sociology of juridical concepts' and an apologetic enterprise whose ultimate aim is an 'authentic catholic radicalisation'. This is also the case of Schmitt's rediscovery of the Paulian concept of 'katekhon', which designates the force or the person that prevents the arrival of the Antechrist. So who is the 'katekhon'? Who is concealing the end of the story? As Schmitt's hypotheses progress, we see a real detective story emerging. In fact it is a dual 'theological who-dun-it?' that the reader will discover, because the theological/political reading is also applied to another classic of the genre: 'The Brothers Karamazov'.
