They had an easy chair that was covered in corduroy, and I would sit in it the wrong way round, upside down. I would ask Mr Cumberland to run a coin across the corduroy again and again, making a noise like a motorbike.#3 I was born in a tenement building in Glasgow, near the center of the city. Tenement blocks were the most popular type of housing in Glasgow in the nineteenth century. They were solid sandstone apartment buildings with four stories and a staircase in the middle.#4 I was born in 1942, during World War Two. I was sickly and always sniffling. I had pneumonia three times before I turned four. But I felt jolly when Florence was next to me. We slept together in the alcove bed in the kitchen, and she taught me songs.
