My mother took me to the hospital, and the doctor said that I would not make it through the night. My mother replied, She will not die. She will not die.#3 The adjustment to not hearing people's voices was so seamless that I didn't even realize I was no longer able to hear. I was in a readied state, as if I had been given the ability to lip-read.#4 I was deaf, and I didn't want to be. I was mad at my mother for never having told me that there was such a thing as deafness. I wore hearing aids through elementary school, even though they never helped.
