Sample Book Insights: #1 The Support Group meets at the public library in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and provides community for people who have lost loved ones to suicide.#2 However, in the past twenty years, a more conservative and pro-gun legislature and citizenry have relaxed restrictions governing practically every aspect of buying, owning, and carrying firearms in the state. As a result, gun injuries and deaths have risen.#3 I traveled to Missouri to learn about people's experiences living in an increasingly armed society. I spoke with people in small towns as well as larger cities, and found that the state had become more tense, polarized, and heavily armed.#4 While many gun owners I spoke with saw the increased availability of firearms as a positive development, many others saw it as a double standard in which society coded white gun owners as protectors and black gun owners as threats.
