He signed a concordat with Hitler in 1933, funding the Church with annual tax revenues of 500 million marks.#4 On 5 March, Pius XI picked up the phone and told his most trusted aide, Father Robert Leiber, that he was waiting. Leiber was a Jesuit priest who had no title, and he knew how to keep his mouth shut.
