Violence is a reality often ignored by metaphysics. Yet it is, and always has been, all over the world, a determination which is, in real terms, common to all forces and all acts including acts of free will. The concept of violence is as broad as that of the act of being. Yet the reasonable man has always wished to regulate and overcome violence. Peace is the most precious asset he desires. This book is made up of four parts. In the first part, the concept of violence is clearly defined. The author takes the hypothesis that the act of being is essentially an act of free will, and that violence between humans is the most significant and radical of all. The different forms of violence show it to be a force which rashly invades a domain other than its own, without respect for the specific temporality of the invaded. The second part focuses on works of reason (intelligence). Modern reason, sure of its grounds, is spontaneously violent. Contemporary globalisation contributes to the reductionist violence of the other's difference, or the other seen as different, within the idea of a formal 'unity'. However, the ways of science are genuinely complex, more so than scientific ideology admits. Thee third part sees man's actions in his most essential structures (free will). Man means to control his intrinsic violence by signing contracts. The judicial system reflects man's awareness of his condition it maintains the exigency of respect for the other and his difference. The fourth part reveals the most fundamental lines of contemporary metaphysics of the act of being and ontological difference, showing in what respect the act of being - claiming oneself to be 'different' - can topple that difference into violence. The metaphysical analysis is completed by a reflection on man, in whom the act of being emerges in the light of a spiritual recognition which is inter-subjective (emotivity). The idea of duration or time of being is then revisited within a meditation on compassion and forgiveness, which are revealed to be the most essential metaphysical dispositions.
