Wiel Arets: Works and Projects
Massimo Faiferri - Collection Architecture
Résumé
"This book, edited by Massimo Faiferri, gathers in chronological order a careful selection of projects and constructed works by Wiel Arets, and documents, through the most important examples - influenced by the rigorous vocabulary of Dom Hans van der Laan, as well as the masterly use of reinforced concrete by Tadao Ando, and of glass by Pierre Chareau - the maturity of the work of the Dutch architect. From the Fine Arts Academy of Maastricht to the AZL insurance building in Heerlen, the KNSM-Eiland apartment towers in Amsterdam to the police stations of Vaals, Boxtel and Cuijk, to the many single-family houses. Wiel Arets (Heerlen, Holland, 1955) is one of the emerging figures in architecture in the Netherlands, the homeland of authoritative personalities like Berlage, van Eyck, van der Laan. After graduating from the Technical University of Eindhoven in 1983, in 1984 he opened his own studio, and later moved it to Maastricht. He is a visiting professor at important architecture schools, including those of Columbia University and Cooper Union in New York. From 1995 to 2002 Arets, who has been succeeded by Herman Hertzberger, was dean of the workshop of architectural specialization at the Berlage Institute."
