Sa sensibilité aux questions sociales la porta à peindre avec sympathie la condition des opprimés de son temps : les ouvriers et les femmes. Proche de Charles Dickens, George Eliot et Charlotte Brontë, elle a occupé une place importante sur la scène littéraire victorienne.
