Amathonte viii

Ce livre conclut 29 campagnes de recherches sur l'enceinte qui protégeait l'acropole, la ville basse et le port d'Amathonte, de ca. 650 av. n.è. à la fin de l'époque classique. Dégradée par le temps et les sièges, elle a connu, par Antigone I, un début de reconstruction, vite abandonné par Ptolémée Ier. C'est la menace de raids arabes (VIIe s. de n.è.) qui entraîne la fortification de l'acropole par un mur transversal à six tours. L'enquête a conduit à fouiller des édifices liés au monument: grand silo dépotoir, soutènements, voies, fours, et un double sanctuaire archaïque lié à la Porte Nord et remplacé après 261 av. n.è. par le second temple d'Aphrodite de la ville. Sont aussi étudiés: l'aqueduc hellénistique, trois maisons d'époque impériale, une citerne liée au culte d'Adonis, et des tombes. Outre l'architecture et son contexte historique, les auteurs ont tenu à présenter la stratigraphie et le mobilier exhumé, datant ou non l'édifice qui le recelait: inscriptions, dépôts de fondation, offrandes des sanctuaires (figurines, céramique, tête d'Aphrodite en marbre, cruche en bronze dédiée à Adonis), corniche d'habitat historiée, mobilier, armes. Les collaborateurs ont consacré des études au silo, au culte archaïque du pilier, aux offrandes du culte d'Adonis, et aux matériels céramique et numismatique. L'ensemble illustre 12 siècles de la vie d'une antique capitale régionale chypriote.

This book concludes 29 research campaigns on the city walls that protected the acropolis, the lower city and the harbor of Amathus, from ca. 650 BC to the end of the Classical period. Antigonus I began rebuilding this wall, which had been damaged by time and sieges, but Ptolemy I abandoned the project soon after. It was the threat of Arab raids (7th century AD) that led to the fortification of the acropolis by a transverse wall with six towers. The investigation led to the excavation of the buildings linked to the monument: a large silo dump, retaining walls, streets, ovens, and a double Archaic sanctuary linked to the North Gate and replaced, after 261 BC, by the city's second temple to Aphrodite. This volume also presents studies on the Hellenistic aqueduct, three houses dating from the imperial period, a cistern linked to the cult of Adonis, and tombs. In addition to the architecture and its historical context, the authors are keen to present the stratigraphy and the excavated material, regardless of its dating: inscriptions, foundation deposits, offerings from sanctuaries (figurines, ceramics, marble head of Aphrodite, bronze jug dedicated to Adonis), a dwelling cornice with narrative scenes, furniture, weapons. The collaborators have devoted studies to the silo, to the archaic pillar cult, to the offerings from the cult of Adonis, and to ceramic and numismatic finds. As a whole, this volume illustrates 12 centuries in the life of an ancient regional capital of Cyprus.
