Following the development of biostratigraphy from classical origins into petroleum exploration and deep-ocean drilling, this survey explores in depth the surprisingly wide application of biostratigraphic methods. Traditionally, microfossil biostratigraphy has provided vital data for sedimentologists, especially for petroleum exploration and production, by allowing correlations between strata on regional and global scales. Recently, vast improvements in the resolution of biostratigraphic studies have come about through integration with dating from radioactive decay, geomagnetic reversals, and cyclostratigraphy. This has expanded the scope of biostratigraphical research, and has allowed a much improved understanding of microfossil habitats and evolution. This volume provides a comprehensive modern synthesis of the science of biostratigraphy.
