Résumé
Continued advances in biotechnology have driven forward the harnessing of microorganisms and plants to help protect our fragile environment in increasingly targeted yet diverse ways from the impact of human activity. Environmental Biotechnology provides a broad overview of the subject, focusing on how biotechnological techniques are applied to solve environmental problems, rather than giving detailed explanations of the techniques themselves.
Opening with an overview of environmental biotechnology, and a review of the key aspects of microbiology upon which the field is based, the book goes on to explore the diverse ways in which biotechnology is applied to tackle environmental problems and issues, from monitoring of the environment and treatment of waste, to the removal of pollutants and extraction of oil and minerals. The book closes with a discussion of two specific topics, the Exxon Valdez oil spill and acid mine drainage from the Wheat Jane mine in Cornwall, UK.
- The focus is on the application of biotechnological techniques, rather than the techniques themselves, making this an ideal resource for students from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Case studies throughout place the applications being described in the context of real problems, enabling the students to better understand how the theory is applied in practice
- Broad coverage allows the book to be used flexibly on many different environment-related courses, giving lecturers the freedom to tailor the use of the book to suit their teaching needs
- The impact of genetic manipulation, genomics, and proteomics on the subject is highlighted; students can see how new techniques drive the refinement and improvement of existing biotechnological methods and tools
