Failure in Geomaterials Handbook discusses material failure within contemporary approaches that exploit the theory of bifurcation and then applies it to geomaterials. The authors explore various forms of rupture and material instabilities. A unique feature of the approach is a similarly rigorous and experimentally based development of the quasi-static deformation of granular geomaterials that support loads through contact friction (dry) and fluid forces (fully and partially saturated).
The book contains a systematic development of the fundamentals of failure in heterogeneous multiphasic materials, combining the mathematical rigor of solid mechanics with physics-based micro-mechanics theory to present a picture of inelastic deformations and failure of geomaterials under a broad range of loading conditions.
