Laser-Induced Damage of Optical Materials

Roger M Wood

242 pages, parution le 20/08/2003

Résumé

A comprehensive update of the author's title "Laser Damage in Optical Materials" (Hilger, 1986), this book is based on the short course that Roger Wood teaches for the IOP and SPIE. In brief, it describes how the laser power handling capabilities of optical systems are determined by the physical properties of the materials used. At low intensity levels these factors are not important, but an understanding of damage mechanisms is fundamental to good design of laser products operating at high power. In particular, damage to optical fibres is a current limiting factor in the use of lasers in telecommunications and is attracting considerable research expenditure.

Readership
Primarily aimed at industrial users of lasers and those involved in the design of laser systems. Second generation researchers, people who use lasers but do not know all the technical background
