Micro Energy Systems

Review of Technology, Issues of Scale and Integration

Robert Beith, Ian Burdon, Mike Knowles

254 pages, parution le 29/09/2004

Résumé

Power transmission is costly and wastes energy. Finite fossil fuel sources are set to decline worldwide in the next century and there are international concerns over atmospheric emissions. Consequently, the energy supply industry is changing rapidly in many ways and in particular there is growing interest in locally produced power, using micro energy systems.

Within the UK, the Government has set specific targets for carbon emissions. This has led to the encouragement of electricity production using new and renewable resources while strongly promoting energy efficiency, and electricity suppliers having an obligation to procure fifteen per cent of the electricity they sell from renewable energy sources by 2015. In addition the nuclear option is being kept open. Micro-energy systems can utilize either renewable energy resources or conventional fuels more efficiently than the grid can provide.

This book aims to contrast the existing and developing generating systems typically in the range 1kW to 2MW for use in hospitals, supermarkets, leisure centres, government, and commercial building and domestic housing generally and for direct connection to the national grid.

Micro Energy Systems is essential reading for power companies, development agencies, designers, policy makers, and all those concerned with fuel cells and power generation.

L'auteur - Robert Beith

Bob Beith currently supports small companies exploiting new energy technology and is an active member of the IMechE's Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group. He has had a long and distinguished career, after obtaining a degree in mechanical

He joined Foster Wheeler working with a team designing and developing key components for the first naval nuclear submarine. He then moved on as R& D Manager, in support extensive power plant building taking place in the UK. Appointed Director in 1978 he spearheaded the introduction of new technology and new business into the company.

From 1988 he was M.D. of Best Global Limited, consultants in engineering environmental clean up systems for process and manufacturing plants.

L'auteur - Ian Burdon

Ian Burdon is a Vice-President and Senior Professional Associate of PB Power, UK. He is responsible for directing all activities within the Company on sustainable energy developments including climate change issues, renewable energy, advanced energy technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis and "clean" energy technologies including the identification and development of CHP and community heating projects.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and a Member of the IMechE, actively supporting the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group and serves on the Renewable Power Committee.

L'auteur - Mike Knowles

Mike Knowles is a graduate of Kings College, London. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the IMechE.

He has written papers on waste heat recovery, energy from waste and industrial boilers and helped to organise many IMechE conferences and events. Formerly a project engineer for Babcock and Wilcox Limited he is currently a consultant on energy and waste matters, involving marketing and planning reports for leading companies in the power supply industry and major manufacturing and contracting companies on waste to energy and CHP.
