Paleoclimatology

Reconstructing climates of the Quaternary

Raymond S. Bradley

614 pages, parution le 11/01/2002

Résumé

Paleoclimatology is the study of the Earth's past climates and is arguably the best example of how multidisciplinary research can open up new areas of knowledge. Over the last decade the subject has mushroomed, with contributions from astronomers, geologists, glaciologists, oceanographers, meteorologists, climatologists, geographers, and even historians. This field is of great relevance as we contemplate the fact that human activities are now on so vast a scale as to be capable of altering the climate of the next millennium.

Bradley begins by discussing the question of "what is climate?" and proceeds with careful descriptions and critical reviews of the various techniques (radiocarbon dating, tree rings, ice cores, pollen records, etc.) used in reconstructing or modeling past climates. His comprehensive approach, clear text, copious illustrations, extensive index, and massive bibliography are targeted to undergraduates and research students. Bradley's readable tone will help foster interdisciplinary research into the mystery of the ice ages, and will advance our ability to predict future climates!
