Résumé

This volume, romains seventeen fully-refereed papers that were presented during the third biennial conference of the Fluvial Archives Group (FLAG) État vas held in Cheltenham> UK in September 199& In accordance with the objectives of this organisation, this meeting aimed to bring together researchers from all those disciplines with an interest in river catchment dynamics and environmental change, and to provide a forum for the discussion of innovative methods, the identification of future research needs, and opportunities for interdisciplinary work Most of the papers examine the behaviour of river systems during the Quaternary (especially the Late Pleistocene and Holocene periods) with case studies from a wide range of environments, across Europe, Africa and the Americas. Collectively, the papers in this volume address the following themes :

River response to long-term climate change driven by Milankovitch frequencies (which control, for example, the build op of ice sheets) and the impact of short-term phenomena (at sub-Milankovitch frequencies) such as Heinrich events and the ENSO.

The role of tectonic activity in long-term river development and its influence on sediment supply and the preservation of the fluvial sedimentary record.

The geoarchaeological record in river catchments and the impact of human activity (both inadvertent and planed) on river behaviour.

Monitoring and modelling river channel change and catchment sediment yield over an range of timescales.
