The Asian tsunami of december 2004 killed a third of a million people, and made the earth wobble slightly on its axis. The world was shocked. Yet we know that such massive catastrophes have happened many times before in earth's history.

Docteur en volcanologie, Bill McGuire a parcouru le monde entier pour étudier les volcans encore en activité et s'est spécialisé dans la surveillance de leur instabilité et des risques liés à leurs différentes manifestations. En 1996, il était en poste à l'Observatoire du Volcan de Montserrat lors du réveil de la célèbre Soufrière. Depuis 1997, il est chargé de cours en risques géophysiques et dirige le Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre à l'University College de Londres. Auteur de plus d'une centaine d'articles et d'ouvrages sur le sujet, il collabore régulièrement à la rubrique scientifique du Guardian et intervient souvent dans des émissions radiophoniques et télévisées.
