years, from the development of ancient astronomy through to
Newton's discovery of universal gravitation and the laws of
motion. It has no rival, either in depth of treatment or
vitality of presentation. The revolutionary developments
that led to the modern view of the world are examined from
a deep philosophical perspective.
Theoretical physicist Barbour (affiliation not cited) discusses dynamical theories. The first three quarters of the text are devoted to the preparatory work in astronomy and mathematics which made Newton's discovery of dynamics possible. The remainder of the text describes and analyzes Newton's discoveries, his synthesis of a viable scheme of dynamics, and his introduction to the concept of universal gravitation.
