Écrivain, critique d'art et réformateur social, John Ruskin (1819-1900) a été professeur d'art à Oxford. Ses travaux sur l'art ont eu une très grande influence sur la réflexion esthétique de la deuxième moitié du XIX^e siècle et du début du XX^e siècle, tant en Angleterre que sur le continent. Marcel Proust s'est très tôt intéressé à son oeuvre au point d'entreprendre (à sa mort) la traduction de La Bible d'Amiens et de Sésame et les lis.
