Résumé

Many of the bridges built over the last 10 years show a high degree of experimentation on the part of both engineers and architects. Bridges are also, currently attracting attention as important features of the cultural and architectural landscape, making a new book on this subject very timely Two main lines of development are evident. On the one hand there is an increasing number of long-span structures being created, particularly in North America, Scandinavia and on the Pacific Rim, where there is an intense pressure for huge transportation systems. on the other hand, there is the European aestheticization of the bridge, exemplified by the work of such architects as Santiago Calatrava, and the re-emergence of the footbridge.

The introduction to this book starts with renowned architectural critic Hugh Pearman's brief historical survey of bridges, using choice examples to illustrate key engineering developments and the variety of basic design types. Matthew Wells goes on to examine the main architectural and engineering trends in recent bridge construction, showing how contemporary bridges often draw upon a mixture of formerly exclusive design types. The bulk of the book then analyses 30 of the most interesting recent bridges. Each bridge is illustrated in full colour, while the accompanying text, drawings and details show how the bridge is constructed and what innovative design and engineering features it incorporates. Emphasis is placed on the collaboration between architect-designers and structural engineers. Projects range from the impressive 1,624-metre Great Belt Link in Denmark, by Dissing and Weitling with COWiconsult, to the innovative covered tube walkway designed for the Plashet Grove School in East London by Birds Portchmouth Russum. Other internationally renowned architects and engineers featured inclucle Jürg Conzett, Future Systems, T. Y Lin, Christian Menn, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Ove Arup and Partners, I. M. Pei, Modjeski and Masters, Foster and Partners, Ben van Berkel and WilkinsonEyre.
