The real life guide to accounting research
A behind-the-scenes viewof using qualitative research methods
Christopher Humphrey, Bill Lee
Résumé
Academics are constantly being confronted with new challenges in their research. Textbooks on research methods tend to provide basic classifications and descriptions of the various ways by which research can be conducted and the standard benefits and drawbacks of each method. Academic journal articles provide abridged accounts of the successful application of particular methods and the way in which they have helped to advance knowledge and understanding. However, both publication formats can often represent the research process in ideal and potentially abstract forms - a process rather void of human fallibility and separate Irom the everyday context in which academics conduct their work. This book seeks to go behind the more official presentations and accounts of research methods to explore the lived experiences, joys and mistakes of a wide range of international researchers principally working in the fields of accounting and finance, but also in management, economics and other social sciences. Authors of the articles in this book address a wide range of issues and obstacles that they have confronted at various stages in their respective research careers. The main sections of the book examine the meaning of research, managing the research process, collecting and analysing data and the publication and dissemination of findings. Individual topics within sections include studying for a PhD, obtaining a research grant, gaining research access, maintaining independence, managing a research team and dealing with journal editors. In reflecting on their personal experiences, authors provide practical guidance on how to overcome the types of problems that typically confront academic researchers in their day-to-day work. The book should appeal to a wide audience, from undergraduate and postgraduate students in accounting, finance, business and management, to new research staff embarking on a qualitative research project and to established academics concerned with the status of qualitative research methods.
