Massively parallel processing for business

John Zamick, Ray Warren, John O'Sullivan

Parution le 31/12/1995

Résumé

The technology called Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) is receiving increased attention since systems built based on MPP achieve much greater levels of performance than the traditional serial processors. This interest, long present in the scientific community, has extended more recently to the world of business, where companies such as American Express, Dow Jones, and Prudential Bache have all purchased MPP equipment to help them handle and process large amounts of data. This book will help demystify MPP and convince readers of its relevance for such business applications as on-line transaction processing, expert database systems for decision support, special-purpose applications for reengineered business processes, etc., within the context of enterprise client/server computing.
  • Explains the practical applications of MPP technology to business, clearly placing it into a comprehensible client/server context.
  • Understanding of MPP technology and its importance is aided by the use of real-world case studies from the US and Europe in the areas of retailing, financial services, leisure and manufacturing (John Alden Life Insurance Company, National Semiconductor Corp., Bass Taverns, British Shoe Corporation).
  • Covers a timely subject. The increasing price/performance advantage of MPP systems coupled with the massive computer power required to deal with the explosion of data makes this the right time for managers to be seeking more information on MPP technology and how to implement it.
  • Includes a Foreword by Howard Richmond, Director of High Performance Computing, Gartner Group
