Implementing the Object Model for Enterprise

Winston Bumpus, John W. Sweitzer

316 pages, parution le 10/11/1999

Résumé

Until now, SNMP has been the standard for enterprise
network management across the world. But SNMP alone
can't handle today's increasingly distributed computing
environments. As the first global network management
standard built on object technology, CIM solves the
ubiquitous problem of automating distributed systems.

All the
major players (3Com, Cisco, Compaq, CA, Dell, HP, Intel,
IBM, Microsoft, Novell, PLATINUM, Sun Microsystems)
have shown an unprecedented cross-company commitment to
CIM. Even more importantly, CIM is a key component of
Windows 2000 and is the chief enabling technology for the
new paradigm in network management called Web-based
enterprise management (WBEM). CIM is a universal
modeling language for network management, just as UML is
for objects, and as XML is for the Web. Modeling languages
describe data structures so that any machine can talk to any
other machine, regardless of platform or programming
language.
