Creating the band
An accounting simulation for Peachtree, Quickbooks, and Microsoft Excel
Beth Kane - Collection South-western
Résumé
Give your students real-world experience keeping accounting records for a small business using commercial accounting software with Creating the Band. In this high-interest simulation, students work as an accountant for CTB, a musical group whose members have formed a business partnership.
Working as the accountant for CTB, students will record transactions using common business documents such as checks and invoices as sources of information. As this is a new business, students record transactions related to forming a company, including the initial capital investment of each partner. As the band becomes popular, music CDs are sold, and income is recognized for live performances, students record sales transactions, as well as adjusting entries for merchandise.
Other transactions involve the routine operation of the business, such as:
- Checks are written to pay for rent, utilities, and other expenses
- Depreciation is recorded on office equipment and furniture
- Payroll is calculated and checks issued to employees
- Owners' withdrawals are recorded.
Transactions in the simulation span an entire year. Therefore, students will complete the end-of-fiscal-period work, INCLUDING adjusting and closing entries. Financial statements are also prepared.
Using your choice of Peachtree, QuickBooks, or Microsoft Excel, your students can gain real-world experience keeping accounting records for a small business using commercial accounting software with Creating the Band.
